Required Components

Required Application Components:

YYGS reviews all applications holistically. Our staff understands that students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and with different educational and extracurricular opportunities. As a result, the essays and letters of recommendation are the most important parts of the application.

All students must submit the following application components:

  • Activities list
  • One 400-word essay and one 200-word response
  • Two “fast take” responses (280 characters each)
  • Official school transcript
  • One Recommender (who will complete the YYGS Recommendation Form* ONLY)
  • Application fee** ($60 for Early Action and $75 for Regular Decision)
  • You must click the Submit Application button on the “Review” page for your application to be considered.
  • OPTIONAL: English fluency test scores (TOEFL or DuoLingo)***
  • OPTIONAL: Need-based financial aid****

*We accept completed online YYGS Recommendation Forms ONLY; we do NOT accept written letters of recommendation. The form helps us to compare among applicants coming from vastly different places around the world, and we hope it helps recommenders to save time since it is a very simple, user-friendly form.

**Please note that YYGS application fees are non-refundable.

***Students may submit English fluency test scores if available. You do not need to take an English fluency test to apply for YYGS, and you can instead waive this requirement.

****Students who would like to be reviewed for financial aid must complete the financial aid section of the online application.

Fee Waiver

YYGS will waive the application fee if it constitutes a significant financial burden for the student’s family. The link to the Fee Waiver Request Form is available on the “Payment Options” page in the YYGS application, but it will only appear there AFTER students have fully completed the “Financial Aid” page in the YYGS application (as it is only available for those who request need-based financial aid). Students who apply for a fee waiver must have a school official finalize the form.

Application Fee:

The application fee must be paid online directly after the application is submitted, and the application fee is non-refundable. Applicants will be immediately routed to the payment page once they submit their online application. Application fees are paid using a payment gateway, since YYGS uses external payment processors to accommodate both domestic and international applicants.

For domestic applicants or anyone wishing to make payment in USD, including eChecks from U.S. bank account, or Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express credit or debit cards, our application will automatically route you to pay through Slate as the payment processor.
For international applicants or anyone wishing to make payment in foreign currency, including bank wire, foreign credit or debit cards, and other native options, like Alipay and UnionPay, our application will automatically route you to pay through Flywire as the payment processor.

To request to switch from one payment processor to the other, please email global.scholars@yale.edu(link sends e-mail) and be sure to include your Application Reference Number in the subject and/or body of the email.

Any/all additional fees charged at the time of payment are charged by the external payment processor, and are collected by that payment processor; YYGS receives exactly $60 USD for Early Action or $75 USD for Regular Decision fee payments. YYGS application fees are non-refundable.

Can I use an alternative payment method?

YYGS does not accept any other method of direct wire or payment; applicants must make payments to YYGS using our approved payment processors Slate (domestic) or FlyWire (international) via the Applicant Status portal. If you attempt to pay YYGS through alternative means, your payment will not be processed and your application will not be submitted nor reviewed until you pay using the approved methods noted above.

YYAS & YYGS Application

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a sister program to YYGS, and is designed for secondary students on the African continent. If you are interested in applying for both YYAS and YYGS, please take the following steps:

1) Submit the application for the program that you are most interested in (YYGS application or YYAS application*).

2) If you apply to YYGS, at the end of the application there is a section for you to indicate your interest in applying to the YYAS Program, too.

If you apply to YYAS, at the beginning of the application there is a section for you to indicate your interest in applying to the YYGS Program, too.

3) That’s it! By indicating your secondary interest, you will automatically be considered for both programs. After YYGS and YYAS applications are thoroughly reviewed, applicants will receive one offer of admission to either YYAS or YYGS.

Please Note: You can only create one application. Our system only recognizes one application, so if you create separate applications for each program, it’s likely your admissions decision will not be released and you will risk losing your chance for a spot in either program.

*For information about the YYAS program, application, eligibility requirements, and more, please visit the YYAS website.

Tuition & Aid

To learn more about this, you can register to view our free Tuition & Financial Aid(link is external) webinar.

Tuition Breakdown:

For YYGS Residential students, the full program tuition for one, 2-week session is $6,500 USD.

Please note that tuition covers all on-campus components of the program (housing, meals, curriculum materials, etc.), but travel is not covered due to our program size and the legal and logistical limitations of working with globally diverse families.

YYGS offers Need-Based Financial Aid (covering up to the full cost of tuition) for all domestic and international students, and then all students coordinate and pay/fundraise to cover their transportation needs.

Payment Deadlines:

Full tuition payment is due on January 4, 2023 for Early Action admits, and March 15, 2023 for Regular Decision admits.

How to Pay:

Tuition fees are paid using a payment gateway, since YYGS uses external payment processors to accommodate both domestic and international applicants. Tuition payments can be subject to processing fees by the external payment processor (Slate or FlyWire). Students can access this gateway by logging into their application, which will direct them to the Application Status page.

YYGS Residential

Experience Our Residential Program

YYGS Residential offers a rare opportunity for likeminded students from around the world to meet at Yale’s historic campus. Students spend two weeks living in college dormitories, eating at Yale dining halls, and learning in an environment that encourages student collaboration and diverse, global perspectives.

Sample Schedule

Our tentative 2023 schedule provides a snapshot of a day in the life of a YYGS student, with program curriculum running throughout the day. Please know that this schedule may be subject to change.

Visa and ESTA Information

Participants traveling to New Haven, CT from outside the United States are responsible for securing the appropriate travel documents to travel to the United States for the duration of the program.

Participants traveling to the program from outside the United States must have a valid passport that will remain valid for at least six months following the program.

International participants who need a visa to enter the United States usually enter on a B-2 visitor visa, or some form of B visitor visa. You can visit this Travel.State.Gov website(link is external) to learn more about these visas, and a description of the B-2 visitor visa activities is attached.

YYGS also provides a Visa Support Letter to all students once they have completed their tuition deposit (or immediately, for Scholarship recipients), which you can access by logging onto your Applicant Status page and clicking “View Updates.”

As noted in the Visa Letter, on the Travel.State.Gov website, the reason many student opt to apply for a B-2 visitor visa is that YYGS should qualify as “enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree.” Our letter reiterates that YYGS students are not enrolled nor registered at Yale, and do not receive any kind of academic credit for participating.

Thus, it is often important to reiterate this during your visa interview, if you choose to apply for a B-2 visitor visa. Though YYGS is administered by Yale, YYGS students cannot apply for F student visas because Yale cannot provide I-20 documentation, since YYGS is not enrolling them at Yale nor granting them any academic credit, and the program is too short in duration.

Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)

International participants traveling to the United States from a Visa Waiver Program(link is external) (VWP) designated country must have authorization through the ESTA prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. ESTA is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) automated web-based system to determine eligibility to travel without a visa to the United States for tourism or business. Visit the ESTA webpage(link is external) on the CBP website for more information.

Steps to take:
1. Check to see if your country is on the VWP designated country list: https://www.dhs.gov/visa-waiver-program-requirements(link is external)
2. If you require an ESTA, apply for one immediately: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/(link is external)
3. If you have any questions, please contact your local embassy.

Please note: YYGS does not need to provide you with any supporting documents to apply for your ESTA authorization.

As the traveler, you will be responsible for ensuring that you meet all COVID requirements for travel as dictated by your airline and/or country. The policies are ever-changing, so we expect you to be aware of the requirements (contact tracing application, testing, etc.) and take action as necessary. We suggest that you travel with a copy of your vaccination card.
